This page is to detail and document the build of Zola and the journey to re-connect her to the earth she originated from. Zola will be a 6 string carved top single cutaway guitar, more commonly referred to as an LP.
The name, or word 'Zola', has its origins in Italy and means 'piece of earth'. Also having possible African Zulu origins, it can also be translated to mean 'peaceful' and 'beautiful' amoung other meanings of tranquility. As the roots of nearly all guitars are literally from the earth, it seemed quite fitting to give this build the name of Zola.
Zola's beautifully curved body will be a one piece mahogany body with a solid maple carved top. Her slender neck will also be a single piece of mahogany with a maple headstock veneer to match her body. A blackened fretboard will form a pathway from her head to her body.
Stained with a walnut stain over a rubbed back black understain, her enhanced grain patterns will encapsulate the story of her travels over the years as she peacefully grew and rose higher and higher to look over the earth that nurtured the life that she once commanded. The black top binding will encapsulate the territory her body stood within and the black hardware will define the shadows she cast from above while drawing energy from the sun to strengthen her roots within the earth beneath her.
Zola's finish will be a wipe on gun stock oil and wood conditioner to lock in her story of growth and her exquisite beauty while retaining her delicate natural texture.
The hardware on Zola will be all black and will consist of the following:
Schaller top locking M6 tuners with Hipshot SK1 buttons (if they fit)
Schaller curved neck pickup frame
Schaller curved bridge pickup frameSchaller strap locksSchaller TOM bridge and tailpieceSchaller volume and tone dome knobs (or speed knobs)Schaller curved metal square jack plate
2 piece neck plate
3-way toggle switch
Electrics will be 500K volume (x2) and tone (x2) pots with 0.047uf capacitors, a 3-way toggle switch and a standard output jack all wired in with a vintage style cloth pushback wire.
The pickups for Zola will be a custom set of coil split 4-conductor shielded wire black on black Italian made MAMA pickups. A Rocker alnico 5 humbucker in the neck and an Exploder ceramic humbucker in the bridge will provide two distinct sounds, plus more when split. The DC resistance of these pickups is 7.6K in the neck and 15.0K in the bridge. Up to 15 different and complex tonal properties could be achieved if using both the coil split humbuckers, in all possible combinations, if it can be wired in correctly.
